Difference between FCL and LCL

FCL is the abbreviation of Full Container Load. One full case capacity, only available to one customer. LCL stands for Less than Container Load, which means less than the container capacity. This means that the cargo only gets the space capacity required within the container, and the other capacity is taken up by the cargo of other shippers. Therefore, bulk containers are also called LCL containers.

Weight and volume calculation

The decisive factor in choosing between FCL or LCL is the weight and size of the cargo. If the shipment contains only one or a few Euro pallets, it is convenient to consolidate them to save costs.

Shipping is calculated differently

For LCL shipments, shipping charges are calculated based on the weight or volume of the shipment, whichever is greater - "volumetric weight" to be precise. For very small shipments, eg containing only one small item, a minimum charge applies.

For FCL shipments, the rate per container is billed regardless of the weight and volume of the shipment - of course, the shipment cannot exceed the maximum capacity of the container.
